At Insight PBS, we understand that behaviours of concern often arise for complex reasons. To truly support individuals and improve their quality of life, it’s essential to uncover the “why” behind these behaviours. This is where a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) plays a crucial role.

An FBA is a systematic, evidence-based process used to identify the underlying reasons or functions of behaviours of concern. Rather than focusing on the surface-level behaviour itself, an FBA seeks to understand what drives these actions—whether it’s communication needs, environmental triggers, or unmet emotional or physical requirements.

Why is an FBA Important?

A Functional Behaviour Assessment goes beyond observation and aims to answer key questions:

  • What purpose does the behaviour serve for the individual?
  • What triggers or environmental factors influence this behaviour?
  • What strategies can be implemented to address the behaviour in a positive and proactive way?

By addressing these questions, an FBA forms the foundation for developing effective, person-centred support strategies that improve the individual’s overall quality of life and reduce behaviours of concern.

How Does an FBA Work?

The FBA process typically involves several key steps:

  1. Gathering Background Information: Practitioners collect information about the individual’s history, current routines, and behaviours through interviews, assessments, and reviewing reports.
  2. Observation: The individual is observed in their natural environment to identify patterns and triggers for the behaviour. This may include examining how the environment, communication styles, or sensory factors contribute to the behaviour.
  3. Data Collection: Quantitative and qualitative data are gathered using tools like the QABF (Questions About Behaviour Function) or ABC charts (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence) to understand behavioural trends.
  4. Hypothesis Development: Based on the data, practitioners hypothesise why the behaviour is occurring and identify its function. For example, behaviours may serve to gain attention, avoid tasks, or meet sensory needs.
  5. Analysis and Recommendations: Practitioners summarise findings and recommend evidence-based strategies to address the behaviour. These strategies aim to reduce the behaviour while building new skills or coping mechanisms.

Who Can Benefit from an FBA?

An FBA is particularly valuable for individuals who:

  • Exhibit behaviours of concern that interfere with their quality of life.
  • Struggle to communicate their needs effectively.
  • Require support in school, home, or community settings.
  • Use restrictive practices as part of their current care plan, with a goal of reducing or eliminating these practices.

The Role of Positive Behaviour Support

At Insight PBS, the FBA is a foundational step in the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework. Once the assessment is completed, we use its findings to develop tailored strategies that empower individuals and their support networks. These strategies focus on prevention, skill development, and creating environments that reduce the likelihood of behaviours of concern occurring.

How Does an FBA Differ From Other Assessments?

While other assessments may focus on diagnosis or treatment planning, an FBA is unique in its focus on behaviour function. It does not label or judge behaviour but seeks to understand its purpose within the individual’s life. This understanding allows us to move beyond managing behaviour and instead support individuals in a way that aligns with their goals and aspirations.

What Happens After an FBA?

The findings from an FBA are used to inform a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP). This plan outlines proactive and preventative strategies, replacement behaviours, and support techniques for caregivers, family members, and educators. The ultimate goal is to reduce behaviours of concern while enhancing the individual’s independence and quality of life.
